Former Germany star and 2014 World Cup winner Philipp Lahm has called for Joshua Kimmich to start in midfield for Julian Nagelsmann's side this summer.
“Joshua Kimmich has played in midfield throughout the entire season. Together with Aleksandar Pavlović, he played many matches,” Lahm said, speaking to Sport BILD.
"Bayern were only narrowly knocked out in the Champions League semi-finals [against PSG] Kimmich has been performing at the highest level in midfield for years.
“I wouldn’t break up the spine of the team with Neuer, Tah, and Kimmich by moving him to right-back. That’s why I would play him in midfield," the 42-year-old explained.
With Lahm opting for Kimmich centrally, the legendary defender threw out a surprising name to fill the right-back void – none other than Borussia Dortmund's Waldemar Anton.
At the 2014 World Cup, we sometimes played with two center-backs in the full-back positions. That is also an option. In my opinion, Waldemar Anton could play on the right.
"On the left, we have David Raum, who plays offensively. With Anton, who is more defensive, you would have the balance between attacking drive on one side and defensive stability on the other," he said.
Lahm wouldn't be the first high profile name to recommend Kimmich for a spot in the middle third – Bayern's honorary president Uli Hoeneß criticised Nagelsmann's plans for the 31-year-old too.
