Luis de la Fuente has named Spain’s 26-man World Cup squad as La Roja chase a second star. He has described them as among the favourites.
Injury clouds remain, with Mikel Merino only just back, Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal recovering from hamstring problems, and Fermin Lopez ruled out with a metatarsal fracture. Marca states this is the first World Cup squad without a Real Madrid player.
Gavi is included despite playing only a minute since his 2023 cruciate injury. Barcelona’s Eric Garcia is selected, and Atletico Madrid defender Marc Pubill also makes the cut.
Celta Vigo striker Borja Iglesias is called as the target man option, while Osasuna’s Victor Munoz keeps his place. Goalkeeper Alex Remiro is omitted in favour of Joan Garcia.
Real Madrid’s Dean Huijsen misses out. Pubill’s inclusion coincides with club teammate Robin Le Normand dropping out, and with Dani Carvajal and Alvaro Morata missing from recent squads, three Euro 2024 final starters are absent.
Nine back-ups will train in Spain before flying to the United States, and would be first in if injuries strike, namely Marc Bernal, Javi Rodriguez, Jesus Rodriguez, Leo Roman, Gonzalo Garcia, Sergio Gomez, Jon Martin, Benat Turrientes and Javi Guerra.
Spain squad: Unai Simon, David Raya, Joan Garcia, Marcos Llorente, Pedro Porro, Eric Garcia, Marc Pubill, Aymeric Laporte, Pau Cubarsi, Marc Cucurella, Alejandro Grimaldo, Pedri, Fabian Ruiz, Martin Zubimendi, Gavi, Rodri Hernandez, Alex Baena, Mikel Merino, Mikel Oyarzabal, Dani Olmo, Nico Williams, Yeremy Pino, Ferran Torres, Borja Iglesias, Victor Munoz, Lamine Yamal.
