The huge stadium on the outskirts of New York staged both the beginning and the end of Borussia Dortmund's story at this FIFA Club World Cup. It was here that BVB played their opening match against Fluminense (0-0). And it was here that they were knocked out in the quarter-finals by Real Madrid. Gonzalo Garcia (10) and Fran Garcia (20) netted goals for Real Madrid in the first half. The Black & Yellows held their own in midfield, enjoyed plenty of possession, but lacked ideas going forward and were too vulnerable at the back. Added time at the end of the second half proved extremely eventful: Maximilian Beier brought BVB back to within a goal at 2-1 (90+2), Kylian Mbappe (90+4) restored the two-goal lead, then Serhou Guirassy cut the deficit back to 3-2 (90+8) from the penalty spot. All this in the space of six minutes! Marcel Sabitzer almost scored the equaliser, but Thibaut Courtois managed to turn his shot away. All in all, BVB can be proud of reaching the last eight in this inaugural edition of the 32-team tournament.

The scenario:

Two group winners faced each other in the quarter-finals after coming through their round of 16 matches. Real defeated Juventus 1-0 in Miami thanks to a fantastic goal from Gonzalo Garcia. BVB qualified for this headline fixture with a 2-1 win over Monterrey – both Dortmund goals in Atlanta were scored by Serhou Guirassy.

Personnel matters:

In addition to Nico Schlotterbeck, Emre Can and Salih Özcan, who did not travel to the USA with the team, and Jamie Gittens - who recently completed a move to Chelsea - Jobe Bellingham and Soumaila Coulibaly were also missing from the matchday squad due to suspension. Niko Kovac made two changes to the starting line-up from the round of 16, bringing in Julian Brandt and Marcel Sabitzer to replace Bellingham and Felix Nmecha. Real Madrid started with exactly the same line-up as against Juve in the round of 16.

Tactics:

Accordingly, Borussia Dortmund started the game with their familiar back three of Niklas Süle, Waldemar Anton and Ramy Bensebaini. Up front, Karim Adeyemi had the same task as against Monterrey: to use his pace to create space for striker Guirassy and feed him the ball. Brandt played behind them in a staggered midfield in front of the Sabitzer/Gross double pivot. Defensively, BVB lined up in a 5-3-2 formation, which transformed into a 3-4-3 or 3-4-1-2 when in possession.

The match & analysis:

Borussia Dortmund's return to MetLife Stadium took place in similar temperatures to their opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup against Fluminense on 17 June (0-0) – sunshine and temperatures of 31 degrees. However, the backdrop was more impressive: 76,611 fans filled the huge stadium on this occasion.

BVB got off to a promising start, with the first big chance of the encounter falling to Julian Brandt in the sixth minute. His header zipped just wide of the Real goal. But the Spanish royalty then scored the first goal just four minutes later: Arda Güler was unmarked on the edge of the penalty area and picked out the man who scored the decisive goal in the round of 16: Gonzalo Garcia.

And Real remained efficient: when a long pass from Bensebaini was intercepted by Aurelien Tchouameni, the ball was shifted to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who played a precision ball into the path of Fran Garcia, with the full-back making no mistake to bring the score to 2-0 in the 20th minute. The Real fans celebrated the quick two-goal lead with a "La Ola" in the stands. Jude Bellingham could have made it 3-0 after 27 minutes, but his low shot went just wide of the target.

Niko Kovac used the cooling break on the half-hour mark to give his players a pep talk. They hadn't had a real chance on goal since the sixth minute, but at least they had enjoyed 51% possession until that point, slightly more than Madrid, and had won 53% of their challenges.

After 40 minutes, Dortmund's second corner resulted in a counter-attack for Madrid, but Vinicius Junior's attempt to lob Gregor Kobel sailed over the bar. BVB went into the break knowing that they had kept Real's defence busy, but had rarely broken through and were too vulnerable at the back themselves. But there were still 45 minutes to play.

And BVB came back out of the dressing room with fresh legs: Felix Nmecha, Yan Couto and Maximilian Beier came on for Pascal Gross, Karim Adeyemi and Niklas Süle. Couto slotted in as a right wingback, Beier played centrally in attack alongside Guirassy, and Nmecha lined up as a defensive midfielder. Ryerson's role was now much more defensive – as part of the back four.

BVB were playing better football, albeit without posing any real threat. A Maximilian Beier effort was denied by Thibaut Courtois on the hour-mark. In the immediate counterattack, Tchouameni struck the crossbar – but Vinicius Junior had been offside in the build-up. Kovac sent Julien Duranville on for Julian Brandt – a like-for-like substitution.

The stadium erupted as Real's star striker Kylian Mbappe came on as a substitute. After 80 minutes, Julien Duranville fell to the ground in pain. The nimble Belgian had only played for 17 minutes when he had to be substituted due to a shoulder injury. Carney Chukwuemeka came on in his place. It was the English midfielder who fired a dangerous effort from just outside the area in the 89th minute, but it went just wide of the post. The spell was finally broken in stoppage time when Real cleared the ball too short, allowing Maximilian Beier to shoot unchallenged. His shot struck the inside of the far post on its way into the back of the net – BVB were back to within a goal at 2-1. And just as all Borussia fans in the stadium were hoping for a last-minute equaliser, Real responded immediately: Kylian Mbappe scored with a side-footed effort to make it 3-1. But that wasn't the end of the story: Dean Huijsen brought Guirassy down in the area just as he looked poised to score. Penalty for BVB and a red card for the Real defender. Dortmund's number nine converted confidently. And with the very last action of the match, the scoreboard almost read 3-3. Marcel Sabitzer tried his luck from about 16 metres out. Thibaut Courtois was just able to get a hand to the Austrian's shot. It wasn't to be.

Text
