We noted last week that it was rather interesting that the Independent, not usually known for their transfer exclusives, had dropped one on Dean Huijsen.

Well clearly they’ve got a taste for it. Miguel Delaney is back with a vengeance today with a red hot piece about Morgan Rogers. Amazingly, this is the first time we’ve seen really concrete links connecting Chelsea with a bid for the rising Aston Villa star. And it’s about time too. He’s looked superb all season, and has now proved himself in the Champions League as well as the Premier League.

Delaney say that the 22 year old is a player that Aston Villa may have to consider selling, against their wishes, because of PSR concerns. The Villain’s wage bill is at maximum capacity, and if they don’t make it into this year’s Champions League they will need to shuffle things around quite seriously.

Chelsea can pounce on Villa weakness – but it won’t be easy

Rogers has had a brilliant 18 months, rising from the Championship to the Champions League, making his England bow and scoring 11 in the Premier League this season despite often playing as a winger or attacking midfielder.

We’ve been unbelievably impressed by him, and would be delighted if Chelsea signed him up to play with this old teammate and good friend Cole Palmer.

Rogers could cost £80m or more

However, despite Villa’s potential PSR problems, it won’t be easy or cheap to secure him. For starters, we will need to make the Champions League ourselves to have any chance, either of persuading him to join or of affording him, given our own FFP and PSR situation.

We can’t imagine Villa are going to let him go for much less than £80m – if they do, they’re making a mistake.
