Liverpool boss Arne Slot has delivered the latest injury news on Hugo Ekitike and Joe Gomez, and provided a fitness update on Alexander Isak ahead of facing Everton in the Premier League this weekend.
The Reds have some key injury concerns heading into the Merseyside Derby, which kicks off at 2pm BST this Sunday.
Ekitike ruptured his Achilles tendon in the 2-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday, potentially sidelining him for the rest of 2026.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, the Dutchman revealed that Ekitike has not yet undergone surgery on his injury.
“He hasn’t been operated on yet,” he said. “It is devastating for him, coming to a new club and having such an impact straight away.
“Your first thoughts are always with him, being out for such a long time and missing out on so many special moments. But he is not the first or last player who will experience this and so many have come back even stronger.
“I’m sure in 10, 15 years he will maybe even say this injury helped me to perform at an even higher level than I did before.”
Joe Gomez will also miss the Everton game after only lasting 20 minutes against PSG. Slot said that he will not be fit enough to feature at the Hill Dickinson Stadium after being taken off as a precaution.
Isak started against PSG in midweek, but was only able to play for 45 minutes. With Ekitike out, he could start again, but Slot confirmed that he is not yet able to play for a full 90 minutes.
“I was saying that you cannot write the script that Alexander Isak is back from four months with injury when the other [Hugo Ekitike] is injured.
“It’s nice to have Alex back, although we also know that he is not ready to play 90 minutes yet.”
