The Stadio Olimpico in Rome witnessed a thrilling six-goal affair between Lazio and Torino, as Marco Baroni was seconds away from earning a win against his former employers.
Maurizio Sarri’s lineup almost picked itself in the absence of seven first-team players, with the latest being Mattia Zaccagni. The Lazio boss maintained the 4-4-2 system he unveiled in Genoa, while making a few compulsory changes. Pedro replaced the club captain on the left wing, while Cancellieri, Boulaye Dia and Taty Castellanos completed the attacking force.
Toma Basic and Danilo Cataldi once again combined in the double pivot, while Ivan Provedel started in goal behind Elseid Hysaj, Mario Gila, Alessio Romagnoli and Nuno Tavares.
Torino started the game on the right foot, and it took them less than 15 minutes to break the deadlock. Nikola Vlasic shifted the play from the left side to the right, picking up Marcus Pedersen on the other side of the box. The Norwegian’s shot was parried away by Provedel, but Giovanni Simeone was in the right place at the right time to pounce on the rebound.
Pedro almost gifted Torino with an uncharacteristically terrible backpass, but Cyril Ngonge failed to put the ball past Provedel. Nevertheless, the 38-year-old Spaniard atoned for himself almost immediately by picking up Cancellieri’s run with an inch-perfect through ball. The Italian winger tried his luck from long range, and his stunner had enough power and precision to beat Franco Israel and restore parity.
If Cancellieri’s first goal wasn’t splendid enough, his second cemented him as the absolute star of the show. Toma Basic’s long ball reached the 23-year-old on the right wing, but he still had a lot to do.
Nevertheless, the former Verona successfully controlled the ball, even with Valentin Lazaro on his back, before setting the shot for himself with a deft backheel, and applying a clinical finish to turn the result upside-down before half-time.
While the first 25 minutes after the interval were relatively uneventful, the second half kept the action hidden until the last stretch. Baroni’s substitutions paid off, as Niels Nkounkou skipped past Hysaj and Gustav Isaksen before finding the unmarked Che Adams who easily slotted the ball past the helpless Provedel.
While Lazio were pushing for a late winner, it was the Granata who snatched the lead in added time. Adam Masina redirected a corner kick with his head, and Saul Coco won the aerial challenge against Castellanos to head the ball home, as Provedel’s feeble touch wasn’t enough to deny it.
In the final minute of added time, Tijjani Noslin’s determination paid off, winning a spot-kick after stealing the ball and getting caught by Coco. After a long review, the referee pointed to the spot, and Cataldi sent Israel the wrong way to salvage a draw for the Biancocelesti.
Lazio have at least avoided a fourth loss in six matches, but their record remains far from impressive, while tough challenges against Atalanta and Juventus await them after the international break.
