Lazio’s goalkeeping worries have deepened after Edoardo Motta left Italy U21 duty with an injury and returned to Formello.
The 21-year-old had been called up for two U21 European Championship qualifiers. He did not feature in Thursday’s 4-0 win over North Macedonia in Empoli. The federation announced in a statement that he had been struggling since the start of the camp.
He has been ruled out of facing Sweden U21 and sent back to his club due to a worsening pre-existing condition, the statement added.
The extent of Motta’s problem is unclear, which leaves Lazio anxious for updates with Ivan Provedel already sidelined. The 31-year-old underwent shoulder surgery earlier this month, ending his season.
Motta, a January arrival, impressed in Provedel’s absence, helping Lazio to three straight wins in his first three outings and keeping consecutive clean sheets against AC Milan and Bologna.
If Motta remains unavailable, Maurizio Sarri will have no option but to turn to third-choice keeper Alessio Furlanetto, 24, a Lazio academy product yet to debut for the first team.
