Lazio Player Ratings vs Roma: Romagnoli Heroics Go in Vain

Eternal Serie A rivals Lazio and Roma shared the spoils in the 162nd edition of the iconic Derby della Capitale, a result which didn’t do any favor to either team.

Buoyed by last weekend’s 1-0 triumph at Atalanta, Lazio knew three points against Roma would significantly increase their hopes of securing a place in next season’s Champions League. Accordingly, Marco Baroni’s side had the first chance in tonight’s derby, but Mile Svilar thwarted Alessio Romagnoli’s towering header.

Svilar had to make another save to deny Gustav Isaksen’s curling effort midway through the first half, though it was a much more comfortable intervention for the Serbian goalkeeper. However, Lazio outplayed Roma in the opening 45 minutes, preventing Claudio Ranieri’s team from creating any danger in Christos Mandas’ box.

It was like Roma didn’t take Romagnoli’s threat seriously. The experienced defender made them pay at the start of the second half, latching onto Luca Pellegrini’s cross to open the scoring with a delightful header. Yet, Lazio’s lead didn’t last long.

The Giallorossi drew level midway through the second half through Matias Soule. The Argentine forward scored one of the finest goals in recent Derby della Capitale memory, beating Christos Mandas with a stunning long-range strike.

Despite creating several half-chances, Lazio couldn’t find a way past Svilar again as we look at our player ratings.

Lazio (4-2-3-1)

Christos Mandas – 5.5

Roma’s uneventful attacking display made the Greek stopper a mere spectator in the first half.

Luca Pellegrini – 6.5

Matias Soule’s tricky feet and pace gave the Italian left-back a headache, but the ex-Juventus star atoned on the other end of the pitch with an assist for Romagnoli.

Alessio Romagnoli – 7.5

Svilar’s brilliant intervention kept him at bay early on, but the former Milan captain held up his end of the bargain against Artem Dovbyk, neutralizing Roma’s best goalscorer. But he didn’t miss at the second time of asking.se

Samuel Gigot – 7

Dominant in the air, the Frenchman delivered another solid performance, though there’s still room for improvement in the build-up phase, where he often lacked composure.

Adam Marusic – 6

Marusic came out second best in his head-to-head battle with Angelino, who looked far more threatening going forward than the Montenegro international.

Matteo Guendouzi – 6

Near-anonymous in the build-up, the Frenchman at least fared well defensively, though he almost scored with a glancing header at the near post early in the second half.

Nicolo Rovella – 6.5

Calm and collected in possession, the skilled midfielder never gave the ball away, even in tight spaces. However, he didn’t take much risk either.

Mattia Zaccagni – 6

Lazio fans must have expected more from their captain in the first half. He nearly gave them what they wanted after the break but missed the target by an inch from just outside the box.

Fisayo Dele-Bashiru – 5

Too slow to get rid of the ball in transition, the Nigerian attacking midfielder often struggled to make the right choice, having one too many touches.

Gustav Isaksen – 6.5

The in-form Danish winger came close to scoring twice before the halftime interval, but Svilar refused to let him get on the scoresheet with phenomenal saves.

Taty Castellanos – 3

It was a frustrating night for the Lazio talisman as he didn’t get the service inside the penalty area. He would want to forget this game as soon as possible.
