Lazio have turned the corner at the start of March, producing better performances and earning important victories. Their purple patch included convincing wins over AC Milan, Bologna, and Napoli. However, their defeat to Inter on Saturday’s dress rehearsal served as a stern warning, but they remain 8th in the table.
While their league campaign hasn’t been memorable by any means, Maurizio Sarri’s men built a solid resume in the Coppa Italia. They began by toppling Milan in the Round of 16, before dethroning Bologna in the quarter-final after dramatic shootouts. In the semis, they drew 3-3 with Atalanta on aggregate, before prevailing thanks to Edoardo Motta’s surreal penalty heroics.
Despite entering the contest as the crowned champions, the Nerazzurri were still determined to showcase their prowess on Saturday, making short work of Lazio. This extended their unbeaten run to nine games across all competitions.
As for their cup campaign, Cristian Chivu’s men pummeled Venezia by five goals to one in their opening tie, and then held on to a narrow 2-1 lead against Torino in the quarter-finals. In their most recent act, they pulled off a remarkable comeback from 0-2 to 3-2 against Como in the second leg of the semi-final.
Lazio (4-3-3): Motta; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Tavares; Basic, Patric, Taylor; Isaksen, Noslin, Zaccagni.
Inter Milan (3-5-2): Martinez; Bisseck, Akanji, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Zielinski, Mkhitaryan, Dimarco; Esposito, Lautaro Martinez.
In football, desire and determination can be as important as quality, tactics and conditioning. Therefore, a more tenacious Lazio backed by their raucous fanbase can be expected to cause more problems for Inter than Saturday’s bland version. But the million-dollar question is: Will this be enough to overthrow the best team in the country?
Based on what we’ve witnessed this season, Cristian Chivu’s side is far from unbeatable, especially on the big occasions. We’ve seen them fumble twice against AC Milan, lose to Juventus in the Derby d’Italia early in the campaign, and collect a single point in their two outings against Napoli, not to mention the humbling Champions League exit against Bodo/Glimt.
Therefore, if Lazio can pounce on the spaces left Inter tend to leave at the back to snatch a goal or two, perhaps they can drag the contest into the deep waters, and, judging by their record in this competition this season, they would certainly fancy their chances in the penalty shootouts.
