Between May 11 and 17, Lazio banked two Scudetti and three Coppa Italia titles, plus a tribute to Gino Lamon. According to The Laziali, few compare.
On 12 May 1974, a 1-0 win over Foggia delivered Lazio’s first Scudetto under Tommaso Maestrelli.
On 14 May 2000, Juventus led by two points on the final day as Lazio hosted Reggina and Juve visited Perugia. Penalties from Simone Inzaghi and Juan Sebastian Veron put Lazio in control, then Diego Simeone added a third in Roberto Mancini’s farewell. A storm waterlogged Perugia’s pitch, Pierluigi Collina delayed the restart by an hour, Alessandro Calori scored, Luca Zambrotta was sent off, and after lengthy stoppage time Lazio were confirmed champions. Four days later came the Coppa Italia.
This period also brought three Coppe Italia. In 2004, a 2-2 draw away to Juventus clinched the trophy. In 2009, Lazio beat Sampdoria on penalties after a 1-1 draw, and in 2019 Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Joaquin Correa secured a 2-0 final win over Atalanta.
Gino Lamon, born in Castelfranco Veneto on 18 May 1903, was a goalscoring midfielder. He represented Giorgione, Andrea Doria, Genoa, Treviso and Padova, twice played for Lazio with 13 goals in 45 games, then moved to Siena and Venezia. He retired at 30 to run a tailor’s shop in Rome, and died on 15 May 1975 in Castelfranco.
Birthdays this week include Franco Nanni, Oscar Lopez, Giuliano Fortunato, Fabio Calcaterra, Costantino Fava, Salvador Gualtieri, André Dias, Lionel Scaloni, Kenneth Taylor and José Antonio Chamot.
