Leeds United have issued their retained list, confirming Illan Meslier’s departure and ongoing talks with Sam Byram, Alex Cairns and Karl Darlow. The announcement follows captain Ethan Ampadu signing a new four-year contract to kick off the close-season.
The club said in a statement that their 2026/27 list had been submitted to the Premier League, Meslier would leave at the end of his deal, and loanee Facundo Buonanotte would return to Brighton. Buonanotte featured for just 36 minutes in the Premier League after arriving in January.
Leeds remain in discussions with Byram, Cairns and Darlow. Darlow has attracted interest elsewhere, but the club are keen for him to stay within the goalkeeping group next season.
Byram has been widely expected to move on after playing only 86 minutes of first-team football last term. Cairns returned in a supporting capacity, operating in what was close to a player-coach role.
Academy departures include Connor Douglas, Devon Brockie, Lewis Pirie and Marley Wilson. Pirie, signed from Aberdeen in 2023, featured sparingly for the Under 21s this season.
Leeds have offered new terms to 20-year-old goalkeeper Darryl Ombang, who had loan spells with Darlington and FC United of Manchester. Professional deals are on the table for Freddie Lane, Jack Morris, Jacob Render, Joshua Hamilton, Will Firth and Northern Ireland Under 19 international Luke Matykiewicz, while an option has been taken for a third year on 18-year-old keeper George Kenyon. Scholars Alex Baird and Elton Simo will depart when their contracts expire.
