Leeds United look set to miss out on re-signing Karl Darlow, with the goalkeeper closing on a move to Manchester United. According to The Athletic, the free agent is near completing a switch in a deal at an advanced stage.
Darlow, 35, left Elland Road when his contract expired at the end of last month. Leeds held talks over an extension but Manchester United and Everton were also in the frame, with both said to have tabled offers, and Leeds now appear to have missed out.
At Old Trafford, Darlow would provide cover for first-choice Senne Lammens, who is set to keep his role after impressing following an £18 million move from Royal Antwerp last season. Altay Bayindir is expected to depart this summer.
Darlow finished last season as Leeds’ first-choice, having displaced £16 million summer signing Lucas Perri in January after errors against Manchester United and Newcastle. The Welsh international then saw out the campaign.
He made 22 Premier League starts and kept five of Leeds’ eight clean sheets, including a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in April.
Losing a homegrown, top-flight proven free agent is a blow for Daniel Farke, who is currently left with only Perri as a senior option. Illan Meslier has departed for Arsenal, and Leeds must now recruit at least one goalkeeper this summer.
