If a recent report from Spanish outlet Fichajes is believed to be true, Leeds United are weighing up a winter move for Ruben Vargas. They are ready to pay around €20m to bring him to Elland Road, but might face a transfer battle with Newcastle United, who are also keeping close tabs on the Sevilla winger.
The 27-year-old Swiss international spent the majority of his youth stint at Luzern before breaking into their reserves in the fourth tier. His impressive stint earned him a first-team status, and after a couple of productive campaigns in the Super League, Vargas completed a €4m transfer to Augsburg in the Bundesliga.
There, he continued for five and a half seasons, depicting his flexibility across the flanks. Having registered 23 goals and 19 assists in 161 appearances, the wide attacking ace plied his trade in Spain and joined Sevilla for €2.5m in January earlier this year.

Vargas has made his mark in Seville, with five goals and assists in 24 games. Predominantly right-footed, the Swiss star prefers to operate from the left as an inverted winger. But he is also capable of operating from the right as well as a ‘number 10’ for his pace, dribbling and creative spark in and around the final third of the pitch.
Although Los Nervionenses expect a bid of around €9m for the attacker, Leeds United are willing to pay significantly more, with performance-based bonuses and certain add-ons, to get the nod over other suitors. They have been linked with various names over the past couple of months, highlighting the necessity of attacking reinforcements, regardless of their late revival.
The Whites bolstered their frontline by snapping up Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lukas Nmecha and Noah Okafor, but only splashed the cash for the latter, having roped in the other two on Bosman transfers. Calvert-Lewin is in red-hot form after a slow start to life in West Yorkshire; however, the club still lack depth and quality down the wings due to form and fitness concerns.
Daniel James’ hamstring injury leaves them with Okafor, Wilfried Gnonto and Jack Harrison as the only outright wide attacking options available for selection. Gnonto has impressed as a ‘super sub’, but Okafor, their high-profile summer signing from AC Milan, has yet to attune to the grind and demands of Premier League football. Brendan Aaronson, primarily a midfield attacker, had his moments as a right-winger. But neither he nor Harrison has done enough to cement a regular role in Daniel Farke’s 5-3-2 setup.
The arrival of Vargas would see Okafor fight for his place in the starting XI. They also challenge each other while representing their nation, and the competition for first-team minutes in the World Cup year would boost Leeds’ chances of retaining their top-flight status.
