Leeds United look set to miss out on re-signing Karl Darlow, with the free agent goalkeeper closing in on a move to Manchester United.
According to The Athletic, the 35-year-old is close to completing a switch, with talks at an advanced stage as United move to add experienced cover for first-choice Senne Lammens, who impressed after an £18 million move from Royal Antwerp last season. Darlow is expected to be second choice, with Altay Bayindir anticipated to depart this summer.
Darlow became a free agent after his Elland Road contract expired at the end of last month. Leeds held discussions over an extension but interest elsewhere complicated hopes of a quick agreement.
Missing out on Darlow would leave Daniel Farke with only one senior goalkeeper, Lucas Perri, who struggled last season. Illan Meslier has already left, joining Arsenal.
Darlow ended last season as Leeds’ first choice after £16 million summer arrival Perri lost his place in January following costly errors against Manchester United and Newcastle. The Wales international went on to make 22 Premier League starts, including a 2-1 win at Old Trafford in April, and kept five of the team’s eight league clean sheets.
As a homegrown, Premier League-proven free agent, he has naturally attracted strong interest, and Leeds now need to recruit at least one goalkeeper this summer.
