Leeds United welcome Premier League rule trial to curb goalkeeper timeouts next season | OneFootball

Leeds United and the rest of the Premier League will take part in a trial next season to stamp out goalkeeper tactical timeouts.

If a goalkeeper needs on-pitch treatment, managers have 10 seconds to nominate an outfield player to leave for at least one minute, informing the fourth official. The FA said the trial is designed to stop injuries being used to disrupt momentum while ensuring genuine cases get proper care. If no choice is made in time, the captain will go off.

Exceptions apply when a free kick follows a foul on the goalkeeper and they need immediate treatment, when the goalkeeper and an outfield player collide, or when the goalkeeper is bleeding. The trial will be reviewed through the season with IFAB to protect game flow and player welfare.

Manchester City’s Gianluigi Donnarumma first did it after Daniel Farke’s side fought back from 2-0 down to 2-2, before losing 3-2. Farke accused him of feigning injury to bend the rules.

Sunderland’s Melker Ellborg also went down during a 1-0 win at Elland Road, and during Chelsea’s FA Cup semi-final victory over the Whites, Robert Sanchez was told by a team-mate to do the same.

Other tweaks from this summer’s World Cup include a five second countdown for throw-ins and goal kicks, plus a 10 second limit for players to leave during substitutions, with slow exits delaying the incoming player. The World Cup tried to keep players from the dugout during goalkeeper stoppages, and this goes further.
