Walter Zenga believes Josep Martinez would have had no space at Inter Milan if the club had signed Gianluigi Donnarumma in the summer.

Speaking to FCInterNews, Zenga detailed how Donnarumma’s arrival would have affected Martinez’s situation at San Siro.

With Yann Sommer set to leave Inter at the end of the season, the Nerazzurri had thought about signing the Italian star this summer.

Meanwhile, Gianluigi Donnarumma was seeking a new club after falling out of favor at Paris Saint-Germain.

Despite his AC Milan past, Inter were eager to lure him back to San Siro.

However, Donnarumma’s substantial wages and PSG’s asking price put the Serie A giants off.

On the other hand, Manchester City spotted a window of opportunity and decided to act quickly.

Indeed, the Cityzens signed the 26-year-old on deadline day for a reported fee of £26 million.

As for Inter, they continue to place their trust in Sommer, with Martinez vying for his chance from the bench.

Zenga believes that goalkeepers like Donnarumma are keen to play every minute.

Therefore, he insists the new Man City star would never agree to rotate with anyone.

“Top goalkeepers like Buffon and Neuer don’t need this,” Zenga said.

“If Inter had signed Donnarumma, there wouldn’t have been any alternation with Martinez.”

Donnarumma’s arrival would’ve likely forced Martinez to leave the club.

However, the Spaniard now has a chance to leapfrog Sommer in the pecking order and become the new No.1.

Indeed, Cristian Chivu handed the 27-year-old his first start in Serie A this season on Monday.

Furthermore, Martinez impressed against Sassuolo, making a sensational save to deny Andrea Pinamonti.

It’s hard to rule out the possibility of the ex-Genoa keeper cementing his place as Inter’s first-choice goalkeeper.

Yet, he must maintain this level of performance to convince Chivu to bench Sommer permanently.
