Leicester City have appointed Ruud van Nistelrooy as their new manager on a contract until 2027.

The former PSV Eindhoven boss succeeds Steve Cooper, who was dismissed last weekend after just 12 Premier League matches in charge.

Van Nistelrooy, 48, expressed his excitement about the opportunity.

“Everybody I’ve spoken to about Leicester City is enthusiastic,” he said. “The quality of the people at the club, the passionate supporters, and the club’s recent history are impressive.

“I’m proud to join and eager to give everything I can.”Leicester chairman Aiyawatt Srivaddhanaprabha welcomed the appointment, highlighting Van Nistelrooy’s leadership qualities.

“Ruud’s experience, knowledge, and winning mentality will be valuable as we embark on this new chapter,” he said.The Foxes are currently 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone.

Cooper’s tenure ended following a 2-1 loss to Chelsea. Concerns over poor performances, reports of player unrest and a lack of connection with the fanbase contributed to his dismissal.Van Nistelrooy’s arrival marks his second senior managerial role. He previously led PSV Eindhoven during the 2022-23 season, guiding them to second place in the Eredivisie and securing the KNVB Cup.

He departed before the season’s conclusion, citing a lack of support within the club. The former Manchester United striker most recently served as interim manager at Old Trafford, overseeing three wins and one draw in four games.

His brief stint included victories over Leicester in both the Premier League and Carabao Cup. Despite leaving after Ruben Amorim’s arrival, Van Nistelrooy’s work impressed Leicester’s hierarchy, convincing them he was the right fit.Leicester reportedly considered several candidates, including Graham Potter and David Moyes, but they ultimately chose Van Nistelrooy for his blend of experience and potential. His first match in charge will be a home fixture against West Ham United, although first-team coach Ben Dawson will lead the side against Brentford this weekend.
