According to BBC UK, Leicester City have lodged an appeal against a six-point deduction for breaching English Football League financial rules, a sanction that has left them in the Championship’s bottom three.
The penalty was imposed by an independent commission earlier this month and initially dropped the Foxes to 20th, outside the relegation zone only on goal difference. Two successive defeats since have left them two points from safety.
Both Leicester and the Premier League have submitted appeals to the judicial panel chair, who will appoint an appeal board. The case is to be concluded urgently before the end of the season and will also consider the league’s challenge to the decision not to punish late submission of annual accounts. Leicester appointed Gary Rowett as head coach on Wednesday and have not yet commented on their appeal.
Leicester were charged by the Premier League in May for breaching profit and sustainability rules across the three years to 2023-24. Under PSR, top-flight clubs cannot lose more than £105m across three years, reduced by £22m for every season spent outside the Premier League. The club’s accounts showed losses of £19.4m to 30 June 2024, £89.7m in 2022-23 and £92.5m in the 12 months to May 2022.
The commission accepted a 36-month assessment period and found Leicester’s overspend to be £20.8m above the EFL’s £83m limit. A maximum 12-point penalty was possible, but the sanction was set at six given an improving financial position over the assessment period. Although charged by the Premier League, Leicester were sanctioned under EFL PSR rules following relegation to the second tier.
