BBC Sport has reported that Leicester City have been docked six points by the English Football League for breaching financial rules, a decision that leaves them hovering just above the Championship relegation zone.
The penalty takes immediate effect and sees the Foxes drop from 17th to 20th in the table, surviving on goal difference alone. The sanction relates to profit and sustainability rule breaches during the three-year period up to the 2023-24 season.
Leicester were charged by the Premier League last May, but the case was taken on by the EFL following their relegation from the top flight. Although the maximum possible punishment was a 12-point deduction, the commission settled on six points after taking into account the scale of the overspend and what it described as an improving financial position.
In a statement, Leicester said they were “disappointed” by the ruling and felt the punishment was “disproportionate”. The club confirmed it is reviewing the decision and considering its options.
The deduction adds to a difficult period for the former Premier League champions. Leicester are winless in their last four Championship matches and are without a permanent manager after Marti Cifuentes was sacked in January.
Interim head coach Andy King will be in charge when Leicester face Birmingham City on Saturday. With the table tightening, the focus for the rest of the season has shifted firmly to avoiding relegation.
