Leicester City have ended their move for free agent Michail Antonio after the striker suffered an injury, and will turn their attention back to finding a new forward.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, the 35-year-old had been training at Seagrave since early December while talks took place, but he sustained a muscle problem that is understood to keep him out for a number of weeks.
Speaking after the 2-1 win over West Brom, manager Marti Cifuentes said Antonio had suffered a setback and that City would not proceed. He called it a pity, praised the forward’s professionalism and character, and said the plan now changes. Cifuentes had previously been impressed with Antonio’s fitness despite more than a year without a club match following a serious car accident in December 2024.
City are light up front after Julian Carranza returned to Feyenoord on Friday, and recruiting a striker remains the priority for this month.
Jordan Ayew and Patson Daka have only four non-penalty goals between them, although Ayew scored on Monday night when finishing off an excellent team move.
Cifuentes said the club are analysing options, holding daily talks, and will try to improve the team if an opportunity arises.
