Leicester City have yet to name the manager for their League One return, with Gary Rowett out of contract and updates on Michael Skubala and Dave Challinor reshaping the field.
According to LeicesterMercury.co.uk, Rowett signed a short-term deal in January after replacing Marti Cifuentes and took charge of 14 games but could not keep City in the Championship.
He won only two matches, the second a 1-0 victory at Blackburn on the final day after relegation had already been confirmed. Late in the campaign he voiced a wish to stay, saying he believed he could be the right fit in the third tier.
One widely linked candidate is now off the table. Lutterworth-born Michael Skubala, 43, guided Lincoln City to the League One title, then, after failing to agree new terms, joined Bristol City on a three-year deal.
Challinor’s stock has also risen after an impressive League One season and a play-off defeat by Bolton Wanderers, with the 50-year-old leaving his club by mutual consent this week. The departure was described as the right moment after long and constructive discussions.
Blackburn Rovers are among the frontrunners for Challinor, though bookmakers have briefly listed him for Leicester. Russell Martin, Christian Fuchs and Darren Ferguson have also been mentioned, and with some bookmakers only Martin and Ferguson are priced shorter than Challinor.
