FLW's Leicester City fan pundit has given his verdict on Jamie Vardy's decision that he won't be returning to the club

Leicester City are preparing for life in League One after a disastrous return to the Championship led to their relegation.

The Foxes finished 23rd in the table, five points adrift of safety, meaning they suffered back-to-back relegations.

The club have still yet to officially appoint their next head coach, with Gary Rowett departing at the end of the campaign after joining in January.

He took on a short-term role with the goal of keeping Leicester in the second division, but a six point deduction penalty didn’t help matters.

The League One side were found guilty of breaching the financial rules, which played a role in their relegation.

And now Jamie Vardy has also confirmed that he won’t be returning to the King Power either, in what is proving a tricky period behind the scenes at the Leicestershire outfit.

Jamie Vardy decision is no great surprise to Leicester

When asked about Vardy’s decision, FLW’s Leicester fan pundit Jamie Preston claimed that he’s not surprised by the move, and that any return had the risk of spoiling the wonderful career he had with the club.

His only hope now is that the striker doesn’t join his boyhood club Sheffield Wednesday, as he doesn’t want to see him scoring against the Foxes, with the two teams competing in League One next season.

“I’m not surprised really,” Preston told Football League World.

“He had 12/13 fantastic years at Leicester, winning the FA Cup, the Premier League, the Championship twice, the Community Shield as well, European semi-finals.

“What more do we want from him? Coming back in League One might ruin his reputation as a goal scoring hero.

“500 games, 200 goals, there’s no more you can ask for him than that.

“So, yeah, I’m not really surprised.

“I just hope he doesn’t go Sheffield Wednesday, comes back and plays against us and scores a few goals against us.

“Now that would be a right kick in the teeth, but the GOAT is the GOAT, he might do that, he might now, we’ll have to wait and see.

“But unfortunately we won’t see him in a blue Leicester shirt again in the King Power. A shame.”

Vardy originally joined Leicester in 2012, and he helped Nigel Pearson’s side gain promotion from the Championship in 2014 by scoring 16 goals on their way to the title.

And Leicester famously won the Premier League just two years later, with the former England international contributing 24 goals and six assists.

He also broke the record for scoring in consecutive Premier League games, finding the back of the net on 11 occasions.

The club went on to compete in the Champions League and Europa League during his time there, as well as win the 2021 FA Cup.

This was the first ever triumph in the competition in Leicester’s history, with Vardy cementing himself as one of the best players to ever put on their shirt.

However, he called it a day on his time with the Foxes in 2025 following their relegation from the Premier League.

Vardy signed for Italian side Cremonese, where he registered seven goals and two assists as the club suffered relegation to Serie B.

The 39-year-old is now a free agent, and is yet to make a decision on the next step in his career.

Jamie Vardy doesn't need Leicester encore

Vardy’s career at Leicester didn’t end on a high note due to their relegation, but he still received a fantastic send-off, and it was the right way for him to bow out.

Returning would spoil that a little, and would heap expectations on him to perform in League One next season.

While it would sting to see him playing against the Foxes, should he join Sheffield Wednesday, it is perhaps for the best that he doesn’t make his return to the King Power.

He certainly showed this year that he can still compete at a top flight level, so he has every chance of performing quite well in League One, but sometimes it’s just best not to go back.
