Lena Pauels is set to leave Benfica’s women’s team after attracting strong interest from clubs in the United States, notably in the NWSL. According to Glorioso 1904, the first-choice goalkeeper will not remain at the club.
The hierarchy, including president Rui Costa, still view her as a key figure and want her involved next season, but mounting overseas attention has complicated matters.
The Germany international underlined her quality in 2025/26, making 28 appearances and conceding 29 goals, performances that have been noted beyond Portugal.
Benfica are monitoring developments, yet recognise that salaries on offer abroad are difficult to match, which is hindering efforts to keep her.
At 28, Pauels’s next move remains open, although an exit is currently the most likely scenario. A resolution is expected in the coming weeks as Filipa Patão’s squad continues to evolve.
