Just last summer it looked as though Leon Goretzka had no future at Bayern Munich after falling out of favour when he wasn’t even named in the matchday squad, but the 30-year-old has since returned to top form and has earned the trust of Vincent Kompany.

Speaking ahead of Bayern Munich’s FIFA Club World Cup game against Benfica, Goretzka discussed his future at the Rekordmeister in the mixed zone.

“I’m very happy to be at Bayern,” he told journalists in Charlotte, as quoted by Kerry Hau.

On his position last summer, Goretzka added: “That was discussed sufficiently. It started off difficult for me but somewhere in the middle of the first half of the season, I was needed again.”

Following the appointment of Kompany, Goretzka felt immediate trust.

“To be honest, I had the feeling from the start that I was highly valued by the coach, and it’s stayed that way. The coach is the most important person in the club for me.” On his performances and future, Goretzka added: “I think I managed to help the team last year and I’m confident I can do the same next season.”
