Leonardo Balerdi has been ruled out of the 2026 World Cup after suffering a right soleus injury during Argentina’s Saturday morning training.

The federation announced that the defender sustained a muscle injury to the soleus in his right leg and will not be on the World Cup roster.

The Boca Juniors academy graduate had been pushing for a place. His recovery is estimated at 21 days, which would have ruled him out of the entire group stage.

With Balerdi out, Lionel Scaloni’s staff must act quickly to ensure a fully fit replacement is available from the opening match. Under tournament regulations, teams can amend their lists up to one day before their first game in cases of serious injuries verified by the medical committee.

Attention turns to the standby list, with Marcos Senesi the leading candidate to join the squad and fill the vacancy. Lautaro Di Lollo is also among the reserves.
