Flamengo will install Leonardo Jardim with the three Portuguese assistants who worked with him at Cruzeiro last year, with a new fitness coach to be selected together. The trio are António Vieira, José Barros and Diogo Dias.
Alongside the departure of Filipe Luís, Flamengo dismissed assistant Ivan Palanco and fitness coach Diogo Linhares, and permanent assistant Rodrigo Caio resigned in solidarity. According to Globo.com, none of Jardim’s staff have yet arrived in Rio, and he is due at Ninho do Urubu with four professionals.
António Vieira, 62, is the longest-serving member of Jardim’s staff, a former 1980s and 1990s player mainly at Nacional in Madeira who moved into coaching in the early 2000s. He joined Jardim at Chaves in 2006, helping win promotion from the third to the second tier.
António has stayed with Jardim for 17 years at Beira-Mar, Braga, Sporting, Olympiakos and Monaco, and later at Al Hilal, Al Ahli, Al Ain and Al Rayyan.
José Barros, 51, also played in the 1990s and later coached Camacha, União Madeira and Marítimo B. He joined Jardim at Monaco in 2016, and in 2024 led Al Ain while Jardim was absent to accompany his wife during medical treatment.
Diogo Dias, 32, did not play professionally. He studied Sports at the University of Coimbra, completing a master’s in performance analysis. He joined Jardim’s staff in 2021 as an analyst, later working with him at Al Hilal, Al Ahli, Al Rayyan and Al Ain.
Flamengo’s permanent staff currently includes assistant Márcio Torres, fitness coaches Artur Peixoto and Junior Bezerra, and goalkeeping coaches Thiago Eler and Fábio Pacobahyba.
