Sport Bild reports that Bayer Leverkusen are exploring a free summer move for Bayern Munich midfielder Leon Goretzka and have made contact with his representatives.
The approach is said to have tested the feasibility of a deal. Goretzka has not ruled it out, though he currently favours a move abroad, with the Premier League appealing.
It is believed the Rhinelanders view Goretzka as a potential leader to replace the influence Granit Xhaka left in midfield after joining Sunderland last summer.
Bayern chief Christoph Freund has confirmed the 31-year-old will leave at the end of the season.
Leverkusen could face competition, with Arsenal understood to be monitoring Goretzka’s situation.
