Chelsea were beaten 3-0 at Brighton on Tuesday, prompting a scathing assessment from Liam Rosenior after a seventh defeat in eight matches.
It was their fifth straight league loss without scoring, the first time that has happened since 1912, a span of 114 years.
According to L'Équipe, Rosenior said he felt drained, hurt and angry, describing the display as unacceptable and the evening as the worst of his career. He added that while he usually defends his players, this performance was indefensible and something had to change radically. He also accepted his share of responsibility, saying everyone, himself included, needed to look in the mirror.
Looking ahead to Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Leeds, he said he would pick a side that represents the club properly. He could make significant changes to his starting XI after that showing.
The defeat left them overtaken by Brighton and further undermined their push for Europe with four league games left. They are seventh on 48 points, but have played one more than Brentford and Bournemouth, who are also on 48 and could overtake them with a draw in this round of Premier League fixtures.
