Liam Rosenior said Strasbourg’s penalty flare-up at Aberdeen was down to a communication problem, insisting Joaquin Panichelli was the intended taker before Ismaël Doukouré stepped up and missed.
According to L'Équipe, after his team’s Conference League win in Aberdeen, Rosenior explained he had wanted Panichelli on the kick and described the episode as miscommunication.
The incident came in the 70th minute when Martial Godo drove into the box and won a penalty. He initially took the ball, with Mathis Amougou and Doukouré nearby. Rosenior had already planned to replace the former Fulham man with Panichelli.
Disappointed to go off, Godo spoke briefly with Rosenior and assistant Justin Walker. Panichelli ran on from the bench to claim the ball from Doukouré, who refused. Advised by compatriot Valentin Barco, the Argentine stepped away.
Perhaps affected by the exchange, Doukouré saw his effort saved by the excellent Dimitar Mitov. Rosenior said Panichelli is the first-choice taker and that he tried to get the message to Doukouré but could not. He praised Panichelli for consoling his team-mate afterwards, adding that it reflected well on the group.
