Lionel Messi decided not to take part in Barcelona’s elections, choosing neutrality as the club prepares to vote on 15 March.

Messi stays away from election battle

As Barcelona move closer to their presidential elections on 15 March, the name of Lionel Messi has returned to the spotlight at Spotify Camp Nou.

Messi is not candidate and will not support any list. However his opinion could influence many voters. Despite that, the Argentine star has chosen to stay completely neutral and avoid all election debates.

Laporta steps down, rivals line-up

Current president Joan Laporta is expected to step down next week in order to run for re-election.

He is set to face challengers Victor Font, Xavi Vilajoana and Marc Ciria.

Messi’s recent visit to Camp Nou where he checked on the stadium renovation works sparked strong reactions on social media.

Many fans wondered if the visit linked to the elections and reports insist it was not political.

Focus on Inter Miami and the World Cup

Messi is currently playing for Inter Miami in the United States. His main focus is preparing for FIFA World Cup 2026 which will take place in the same country.

Argentina will defend their world title and the tournament is expected to be Messi’s last World Cup.

Because of its importance, the forward does not want any distractions linked to Barcelona’s internal politics.

Past wounds shape current decision

Messi's choice is also linked to past experiences.. In 2021 he was disappointed after promises were made to him to renew his contract before his surprise departure to Paris Saint Germain.

That moment damaged his relationship with Laporta and failed return attempt two year later made things worse.

Since then Messi avoided contact with the current board. According to Marca, the player plans to wait until the elections end and his international duties are over before thinking about a future return to Barcelona.
