Lisandro Martinez hit back at Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt after Manchester United’s 2-0 derby win over Manchester City on Saturday, having kept Erling Haaland quiet.
According to L'Équipe, the former United pair had taken aim at the Argentine on a podcast. Butt suggested Haaland would pick Martinez up and run with him like a father with a small child, while Scholes said the striker would score then throw him into the net, and had grimaced at the prospect of Martinez facing Haaland.
Martinez addressed Scholes directly, inviting him to come to his house and criticise him to his face.
He added that people say nothing when face to face, that he does not care what is said, and that he focuses on his and the team’s performances, saying he gives everything for the club until his last day.
Asked about reconnecting with supporters, who have shown anger in recent months but welcomed Michael Carrick’s arrival in the dugout, Martinez said it is about connection and how the team represent them on the pitch. If fans see the same fight, he added, they will be with the team.
