Manchester United suffered a major injury blow in the build-up to the Everton game as Lisandro Martinez was ruled out of the contest.

Leny Yoro was drafted into the starting line-up in the Argentine’s absence, and the Frenchman produced a masterclass at the back as the Red Devils kept a clean sheet and won the contest 1-0.

The World Cup winner keeps picking up niggles, and it seems like his body is breaking down as a result of successive serious injuries since his switch from Amsterdam to Manchester.

Since the summer of 2022, the Argentina international has missed over 90 games due to injuries.

Poor injury record

There have been murmurs that Barcelona are eyeing a move for the 28-year-old, and given his injury record, INEOS might be tempted to accept a suitable proposal.

However, according to reporter Ben Jacobs (via Sports Mole), the 20-time English league champions are not looking to sell their No.6.

“Manchester United sources are clear: they want Lisandro Martinez to stay for longer than his current contract length.”

This effectively means that the Old Trafford giants are considering offering the centre-back a new and improved deal, given his current deal ends in 2027, with United having the option of extending it by a year.

Contract update

The decision makes a lot of sense. Despite his injury troubles, the Newell’s Old Boys academy product still has a lot to offer both on and off the pitch.

His leadership qualities are unmatched, and what he lacks in height, he more than makes up for with his heart and determination. Not to mention his unparalleled ball-playing skills.

United tend to struggle to progress play from deep without the left-footed ace, and that was on show against the Toffees at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

It makes sense for United to try to hold on to Lisandro Martinez

While Ruben Amorim had doubts about Lisandro Martinez adapting to his three-at-the-back style, and hence was considering a switch to defensive midfield, there are no similar concerns under Michael Carrick.

The caretaker head coach’s arrival has brought out the best in the Gualeguay-born star, and hopefully, he can make a full recovery ahead of the crucial test against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
