Very few would have predicted such a scoreline before kickoff, but it goes to show that in derby games, form often goes out the window.

Lisandro Martínez gave United a surprising lead, but Cody Gakpo equalized for Liverpool shortly after. Mohamed Salah then put Liverpool ahead with a penalty. However, there was late drama when Amad Diallo, known for scoring late goals against Liverpool, ultimately levelled proceedings in the 80th minute.

This result is a boost for struggling United, who remain winless in their last 10 away games against Liverpool in all competitions (five draws and five losses), marking their longest such streak. On the other hand, Liverpool has now recovered 13 points from losing positions in the Premier League this season, with only Manchester City (14 points) having gained more.

It’s worth noting that after falling behind in only four of their first 13 league games under Arne Slot, the Reds have trailed in four of their last six matches.

Liverpool player ratings

Alisson: 53%

Much like Ryan Giggs in that legendary FA Cup semi-final against Arsenal, there was only one way for Martinez to score against Alisson given his angle. Alisson, often regarded as the best goalkeeper in the Premier League, was caught in no man’s land during Diallo’s successful late attempt on goal. However, this was not one of his best performances. He only made two saves and ended with a -1.42 goal prevention score.

Andy Robertson: 56%

We have yet to see the best of Robertson, and this was another relatively quiet game for the flying Scotsman, as he did not make a single touch in the opposition box, which has often been his hallmark. Although he completed two crosses, neither came from open play, which is something we have come to expect from him in the past.

Virgil van Dijk: 55%

This performance was a modest outing for the Dutch colossus, whose retention rate of 91.07% placed him in the 80th to 95th percentile. He also recorded five clearances and two interceptions while retaining possession.

Ibrahima Konaté: 68%

Back in Liverpool’s starting lineup after recovering from a knee injury, Konaté didn’t show any signs of having missed a step. He made one crucial interception inside the box, while also registering seven clearances and five interceptions. He won six aerial duels, as well as all of his ground duels, and completed 13 passes into the final third. Encouraged to step forward, the Frenchman won possession five times in the middle third and successfully initiated two offside traps.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 59%

This was a mixed performance from the usually reliable Alexander-Arnold, who faced significant pressure from United’s attacking efforts, with most of their play directed down his flank. Although he made four interceptions that helped retain possession, a misplaced pass from him contributed to United’s opening goal, and he was dribbled past twice during the match.

Alexis Mac Allister: 65%

Mac Allister’s performance was marked by one intentional assist and three successful take-ons, demonstrating his increased presence higher up the field. He was unfortunate not to score, with Onana’s foot making a crucial save for United. Additionally, he won seven duels, more than any other Liverpool player, showcasing his excellent box-to-box abilities.

Ryan Gravenberch: 58%

Gravenberch delivered another quietly impressive performance, excelling in several key aspects of the game. The rising star of Liverpool achieved a 100% success rate in take-ons and maintained a 65% accuracy in forward passing. He won possession three times in the middle third of the field and created one significant scoring opportunity.

Cody Gakpo: 62%

He levelled proceedings with his only shot on target from two attempts. Six of Gakpo’s last seven Premier League goals have either given Liverpool a lead (2) or equalised (4), while the Dutchman has scored in three successive appearances in the competition for the very first time.

Curtis Jones: 51%

Of the 15 players who played for Liverpool today, nine attempted at least one shot on goal. Curtis Jones did not make a shot, nor did Alisson, Robertson and Konaté. Harvey Elliott and Darwin Núñez, who came off the bench, were shotless. However, fellow substitutes Diogo Jota and Conor Bradley did manage to force goalkeeper Onana into action.

Mohamed Salah: 69%

Another goal from the Egyptian king, this time from 12 yards, marking his only shot on target out of four attempts. He also completed half of his attempted take-ons. Salah, who had a team-high nine touches in the opposition box, often floated on the periphery during this game, but his talent means he can make a significant impact at any moment.

Luis Díaz: 41%

Since being converted into a ‘false nine,’ Diaz has shown promise, but today the Colombian forward was not at his best. He had no shots on target and did not create any significant chances. His touches in the opposition box was in the 20th to 40th percentile compared to other strikers.

Man United player ratings

André Onana: 65%

Onana was the busier of the two goalkeepers, being called upon to make four saves, all inside the penalty box. He came agonisingly close to stopping Salah’s kick from 12 yards. Although he completed five long passes, his long ball accuracy was only 25%, which did not help his team, as it allowed possession to return to a usually relentless Liverpool side.

Lisandro Martínez: 59%

Martínez broke the deadlock but also showcased a strong defensive performance. He made a crucial last-man tackle and recorded three interceptions, helping to retain possession. Additionally, he created a significant chance, making him the only centre-back to do so in today’s game. Being one of United’s three centre-backs allows Martínez the freedom to play a more progressive role.

Harry Maguire: 54%

He nearly won the game at the last moment. Maguire, effectively United’s sweeper, was compelled to make seven clearances and successfully intercepted the ball on four occasions, winning possession. However, his success rates were 50% for aerial duels and 33.3% for ground duels, which limited his overall score.

Matthijs de Ligt: 39%

Ultimately, De Ligt’s performance was hampered by carelessness, which led to Liverpool’s penalty and allowed them to take the lead. Although he won 100% of his aerial duels (albeit from just one attempt), his overall contributions were below average: He recorded one tackle, one interception, no clearances, and a ball retention rate of under 90%.

Diogo Dalot: 57%

Received a yellow card for a tactical foul, specifically holding Salah to prevent a Liverpool counter-attack. On a more positive note, this was a significant improvement from Dalot compared to his recent performances. He registered five touches in the opposition box—Diallo should have capitalized on one of his brilliant crosses—and made six clearances. Despite this progress, there is still room for him to improve further.

Manuel Ugarte: 50%

No player on the Anfield pitch won more duels than Ugarte, who registered eight in what was a standout performance in England’s top division. He also led in tackles, winning three. However, there are areas for improvement: he was dribbled past four times, recorded a 35% success rate on forward passes, and made three unsuccessful touches, which ultimately limited his player rating that deserved to be higher.

Kobbie Mainoo: 52%

Mainoo brought the energy that Manchester United’s midfield has been lacking in recent weeks. Complementing Ugarte, he won possession four times in the middle third and successfully completed two tackles. However, his enthusiasm was sometimes a liability, as he was dribbled past three times during the match.

Noussair Mazraoui: 59%

After starting the season slowly, Mazraoui has quickly become one of United’s more dependable performers. He put in another strong shift for the Red Devils, completing two take-ons as he pushed up the field while also making an interception to retain possession. Additionally, he made two clearances, highlighting his alertness on the pitch.

Bruno Fernandes: 73%

Manchester United’s much-maligned skipper contributed significantly to the match with one intentional assist and three successful take-ons. He made 16 entries into the penalty area and had only one unsuccessful touch. Although he didn’t win a single tackle, he was never dispossessed.

Amad Diallo: 77%

Rescued a much-needed point for Man United, with Diallo now making a habit of scoring late against the Red Devils’ biggest rivals. Aside from his equaliser, the forward completed two take-ons while making 11 passes in the final third.

Rasmus Højlund: 42%

He had one shot that was on target, but he didn’t look confident beating Alisson, as Gary Neville mentioned during the Sky Sports commentary. The Danish striker lacked the confidence to visualise his finishing before striking the ball.
