Liverpool are just asking for trouble with their plan after Ibrahima Konate agreed to join Real Madrid.
Ibrahima Konate will leave Liverpool this summer. His contract expires and there's no agreement on a new one - a sad end to his time at the club.
We even know that he'll be off to Real Madrid. Now, that likely hinges on how their presidential election goes this Sunday but we imagine Konate will end up at the Bernabeu.
So what for Liverpool? They're losing a starting player in his prime years for no transfer fee, leaving them in a difficult spot.
The Athletic reports that they won't actually do anything. The club will commit to Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni as their defensive options for next season.
Yes, that's four centre-backs. Yes, they're good quality. But Liverpool are asking for trouble with this idea.
There are two experienced options in Gomez and Van Dijk. Both, however, are out of contract in 2027 and Gomez's difficult injury record suggests he won't actually be available for much of next season.
There'a already a gross overreliance on Van Dijk, too. This plan only extends that, especially as both Jacquet and Leoni will be making comebacks from surgery.
No one should be surprised if a 35-year-old Van Dijk gets injured next season. The other three defenders are in similar positions.
It feels as though Liverpool are taking a needless risk and hurtling towards a dangerous situation in 2027. They're currently set to need two new senior centre-backs, potentially starters, in one go. And that's assuming their younger options are able to hold their own.
Getting ahead of the problem with a signing now feels like the smart move.
Ibrahima Konate: Situation Summary
Liverpool Campaign and Stats
As of 3 June 2026, Ibrahima Konaté has concluded his final domestic campaign with Liverpool. The 27-year-old French centre-back made 183 total appearances for the Reds since his 2021 arrival, anchoring the backline through a turbulent season that culminated in a fifth-place Premier League finish. He capped off his club campaign by playing the full 90 minutes and picking up a yellow card during the 1–1 draw against Brentford on 24 May, as the Merseyside club officially missed out on Champions League qualification.
Free Agency and Real Madrid Agreement
A major transfer bombshell hit Anfield on 31 May when Liverpool officially confirmed that Konaté will leave the club as a free agent when his contract expires at the end of June. Lengthy contract extension negotiations ultimately collapsed over disagreements regarding performance and trophy bonuses. The powerhouse defender has already reached a verbal agreement on a four-year contract with Real Madrid, with the blockbuster move expected to be finalized imminently.
