Real Madrid are set to take on Liverpool tomorrow in what will be a must-win game for Los Blancos as they look to get back to winning ways.
Just a day before the big clash, it has come to light that Liverpool had set their sights on securing the services of Real Madrid superstar, Federico Valverde.
According to Jorge Picon, the Premier League giants attempted to make a move for the Uruguayan international in the summer of 2023.
The Reds, facing a significant overhaul in their midfield with the departure of stalwarts like Henderson, Keita, Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Milner, identified Valverde as a prime target to rejuvenate their squad.
Liverpool’s strategy was to capitalize on what they perceived as an overabundance of midfield options at Real Madrid, promising Valverde a central role in their team.

Despite the allure of a new challenge in the Premier League, Valverde’s heart remained with Real Madrid, his home since his teenage years when they brought him from Uruguay.
Valverde’s decision to stay was solidified with a contract extension announced on November 9, 2023, which not only increased his salary but also included a staggering €1 billion release clause, effectively shielding him from potential suitors like Liverpool.
His commitment to Real Madrid has since been rewarded with further accolades, including a second Champions League title and a third La Liga trophy in the 2023-24 season.
This refusal prompted Liverpool to pivot, leading to significant investments in other midfield talents like Alexis MacAllister and Ryan Gravenberch, totaling €172 million, with €82 million specifically for central midfielders.
