Liverpool have never been strangers to high-stakes transfer windows, but their biggest splashes have come when necessity meets opportunity. Back in 2018, the club shelled out £67 million for Alisson Becker and £75 million for Virgil van Dijk, investing heavily in fixing vulnerabilities between the posts and at the back. Those moves helped redefine their defensive core and proved the value of bold recruitment.
Fast forward to 2022, Darwin Núñez’s arrival was seen as another high-roller gamble. Coming off a breakout season in Portugal, the Uruguayan commanded a fee that could have reached £85 million. However, three years in, the final figure will land closer to £76.8 million, a sobering outcome that has injected a greater level of caution into Liverpool’s transfer dealings.
That same caution, however, may soon give way to conviction. Reports indicate Liverpool are on the verge of securing one of the continent’s hottest talents. Florian Wirtz, the 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen playmaker, is reportedly on the brink of becoming the club’s most expensive player ever.

Wirtz has twice been named Leverkusen’s Player of the Year and has consistently been referred to as “world class” by those closest to the Bundesliga. His poise, intelligence, and creativity in midfield have drawn attention from Europe’s elite, but it is Liverpool who appear to be in pole position.
According to reports last night, that fee is likely to be £100 million with add-ons of £13 million, a package which converts to a €134 million sum that you might also see floating around the internet.
That figure would eclipse Liverpool’s previous record outlay by at least £23 million. If Wirtz delivers on his potential, the investment could look more than justified and might rise to £36 million above the current high watermark. For a club not known for scattergun spending, this would be a landmark statement of intent.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano has been closely monitoring developments and offered a confident update on the saga.
He said: “It’s very close. Extremely close.
“There have been new contacts in recent hours, and I’ve always been optimistic, I remain optimistic. I think Florian Wirtz will be a Liverpool player. I maintain my position.”
“It’s just about finalising the agreement club to club. The agreement with the player has been completely done for around two weeks. He only wants Liverpool, the player is just waiting for them.
“I think it’s just a matter of time. In the next few days, the deal should get done.”
That optimism will be music to the ears of Liverpool supporters. The last few days have brought increasing unease, with personal terms reportedly settled two weeks ago but little public progress since. Yet all signs now point to completion, barring any last-minute twists.
Deals of this size always require patience. The paperwork, clauses and assurances involved at this level are considerable. But there is growing belief that the wait will soon be over and Wirtz will be wearing red at Anfield before long.
