Liverpool have confirmed the news that midfielder Marie Höbinger has sustained an Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) injury.

The Reds announced the news via a post on their official club website this afternoon.

The 24-year-old Austrian international sustained the injury during Sunday’s Barclays Women’s Super League fixture against Manchester City at Anfield. Höbinger went down in the 26th minute and had to be replaced by Kirsty Maclean. Liverpool went on to lose the game 2-1.

Höbinger’s injury has now been fully-assessed by the Liverpool medical team and it has been confirmed that she has ruptured her Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL). She will undergo surgery in the coming days before beginning a lengthy period of rehabilitation. The midfielder is expected to be sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Commenting on the player’s injury, Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor said “Of course, we’re all devastated for Marie and football can be a cruel game at times.

“Everyone here at Melwood – our medical staff, the coaching and backroom team and Marie’s teammates – will all be right behind her and giving her our full support during her rehabilitation programme.

“It’s a tough road back but we will be with her every step of the way and helping her in any way we can.”

Liverpool are next in action on Thursday evening when they travel to Durham in the Subway Women’s League Cup.
