Liverpool have endured an underwhelming 2025-26 campaign, despite their record spending on new signings last summer. 

They are set to end the season without a trophy and are well off the pace set by Arsenal and Manchester City. 

Reports suggested Xabi Alonso was on his way to Anfield, with the club’s hierarchy impressed with his work at Bayer Leverkusen.  

However, Sky Sports report Liverpool plan to retain Arne Slot as their head coach next season. 

Any doubts about Slot’s future appear to be subsiding rapidly, with the Merseyside club on course to seal Champions League qualification.  

A fifth place Premier League finish will secure European football next season after Arsenal qualified for the semi-finals by beating Sporting Lisbon. 

Liverpool, who won 2-1 at Everton on Sunday, have created a seven-point gap with sixth-placed Chelsea. 

Slot took over as Liverpool manager in the summer of 2024, replacing Jurgen Klopp. 

The Dutchman made an immediate impact, leading his team to the Premier League title in his debut season. 

Things have gone south this season, with Liverpool producing a series of dismal performances. 

However, the Reds have improved in recent weeks, sealing a routine victory against Fulham before delivering a decent display in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain. 

They then came away with maximum points from the home of their bitter rivals Everton following an injury-time winner from Virgil van Dijk.
