Two Liverpool Youngsters Could Benefit Massively from Andoni Iraola’s Arrival

The potential appointment of Andoni Iraola at Liverpool is being viewed largely through the lens of tactics, intensity and first team recruitment. Yet on Media Matters for Anfield Index, Dave Davis and David Lynch also touched on another important angle, what Iraola’s arrival could mean for young Liverpool players such as Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha.

Davis raised the point by saying that “a lot of people” had mentioned “the young players like Rio and Train Ione,” with the discussion focusing on whether a change from Arne Slot to Iraola could open up more opportunities.

He also noted that, from what had “come out over the last week or so,” Slot may not have had “the biggest involvement in the academy,” while adding that this was “maybe understandably because it was a win now mentality.”

Trey Nyoni route could change

Lynch’s response was particularly interesting on Trey Nyoni. He said: “My thoughts were if Slot was going to stick around, really, I felt that training only would probably go on loan, to be honest, because I just couldn’t see a route to minutes for him.”

That line framed the potential significance of Iraola’s arrival. Under Slot, Lynch believed Nyoni’s best path may have been away from Liverpool, at least temporarily. Under Iraola, the picture could look different.

Lynch continued: “Whereas we’re talking here about the need to have a bigger squad to cope with Iriola football. He’s proven himself capable of developing youngsters as well. Then I think there’s a real route to regular games for him next season.”

That is the key point. Iraola’s football, with its intensity and physical demand, may require Liverpool to use more players across the campaign. For a young midfielder like Trey Nyoni, that could create a clearer route to first team minutes.

Lynch added: “So that is quite exciting because I quite like the look of him.”

Rio Ngumoha tipped to step up

The conversation then moved to Rio Ngumoha, another young Liverpool talent who could benefit if Iraola is appointed.

Lynch said: “And with Rio, again, he’s going to step up this season. He’s going to play a bit more than he did even last season and straight from the start.”

That was not presented as a vague academy hope. It was connected directly to what Iraola may value in a player. Lynch said: “Iraola will like a lot about what he brings as well in terms of directness.”

That word, “directness,” feels important in the context of Iraola’s style. Earlier in the podcast, Lynch had spoken positively about the excitement of Iraola’s football, saying Bournemouth “have been such a joy to watch under Iriola.” For a young attacker like Rio Ngumoha, a more front foot approach could suit his development.

Lynch added that “there’s so much more to come from him,” before concluding: “I think it will really suit those two.”

Academy link could improve

Perhaps the most pointed part of the discussion was not about either player individually, but about the academy as a whole.

Lynch said: “Maybe we’ll see a bit more of a kind of a better link to the academy now.”

He then added: “That’s one area I think the academy staff, as I understand it, weren’t particularly enamoured with Slott, regardless of the attention he paid to that.”

For Liverpool, that could be significant. If Iraola arrives and creates a stronger connection between the first team and academy, players such as Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha may not merely train around the senior squad, they may see a genuine pathway.

Lynch summed it up by saying: “I think Iraola is going to prove he’s much better at paying attention to that. That can be a real boost for everyone at the academy as well.”

The message from David Lynch to Dave Davis on Anfield Index was clear. Andoni Iraola’s potential Liverpool arrival may bring intensity and a new style of football, but it could also give Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha a much more meaningful first team opportunity.
