Frenkie de Jong will have a major decision to make with regard to his future at FC Barcelona come summer.

The 27-year-old’s contract with the Catalans expires in 2026, meaning he will enter the final year of his deal this summer.

Barcelona have made it clear that they do not plan to entertain such a situation and as such, the Dutchman has to either sign a renewal or be placed on the transfer market.

As reported, clubs from Saudi Arabia have shown an interest in signing De Jong in the summer. But it appears that a top team from England is also keen.

Liverpool interested in De Jong

Indeed, as reported by Caught Offside, Liverpool are interested in Frenkie de Jong as they are looking to reinforce their midfield department in the summer.

The report states that De Jong is one of the two midfielders that the Reds are considering, with the other player being Angelo Stiller of VfB Stuttgart.

This is not the first time that the Netherlands international’s name has been linked with Liverpool. There has been interest in past but nothing ever came of it.

A transfer could be a realistic possibility this time out, though, if De Jong does not sign a new contract at Barcelona.

According to the report, the former AFC Ajax star could be available for a fee of around €35 million in that scenario. However, the Barcelona captain’s massive wages could end up being a deterrent for Liverpool.

De Jong, for his part, has always maintained that he is happy at Barcelona and wishes to continue at the club.

Having been non-responsive to the club’s renewal offer over the past year, the 27-year-old is now said to be willing to sign an extension, which could hurt Liverpool’s chances of a transfer.
