Liverpool Linked With Matteo Ruggeri As Atletico Madrid Reject Approaches

Liverpool’s long-running admiration for Matteo Ruggeri appears to have met another firm barrier, with Atletico Madrid unwilling to sanction a sale despite interest from across Europe. According to TuttoMercato, the Spanish club have turned away every approach for the left-sided defender, including enquiries from Liverpool and Tottenham.

Ruggeri’s situation had attracted attention after the arrival of Alejandro Grimaldo, a move that naturally led to fresh speculation over squad balance on Atletico’s left flank. That said, the current indication is that Diego Simeone wants to keep Ruggeri for at least another season after being convinced by his performances.

Liverpool’s interest is described as nothing new. The report suggests the Merseyside club have been monitoring Ruggeri’s development for a couple of years, with an earlier check made after the 2024 Europa League final. On that occasion, Atletico’s response was clear, and the same stance has now been repeated.

There has also been notable competition. Clubs in Serie A, including Fiorentina, AC Milan and Juventus, are all said to have explored the possibility of a deal. Inter were credited with interest too, although their position appears dependent on movement involving Carlos Augusto.

What stands out most is Atletico’s resolve. The report states there were offers and proposals worth well beyond the £20 million invested a year ago, yet none altered the club’s thinking. For now, there is no sign of a compromise being found.

Tottenham, under Roberto De Zerbi, also assessed Ruggeri as a possible option, but they encountered the same lack of availability. That consistency points to a club-level decision rather than a negotiation tactic.

From Liverpool’s perspective, this feels like one of those situations to monitor rather than force. If Ruggeri remains highly regarded internally, the club may simply wait for circumstances to change. For the moment, though, Atletico Madrid are holding their line and Liverpool are left to consider alternatives in the left-back market.

As a Liverpool supporter, this is one of those reports that instantly sparks curiosity. Ruggeri fits the profile of a player the club could reasonably track, young, developing, technically sound and already attracting serious attention from top clubs in Italy and England. When the same name keeps resurfacing over multiple windows, it usually means the interest has substance somewhere in the background.

The big question is whether he is a genuine target for the current recruitment team or simply one of many full-backs watched over time. Liverpool have been linked with plenty of left-sided defenders in recent years, and that tends to happen when a squad role needs refreshing or long-term planning. Ruggeri being on that radar would make sense.

What is encouraging, if you are reading between the lines, is that Liverpool seem to have identified him early. That often tells you the scouting process is sound, even if the deal does not immediately materialise. The frustration, of course, is Atletico’s refusal to engage. If Simeone wants him and the club are rejecting strong offers, there is little room to manoeuvre.

For Liverpool, patience may be the sensible route. Either the stance softens in a future window or the club pivot to another option. Still, this is a name worth remembering because strong interest that lasts more than a year rarely disappears completely.
