The trial of a Liverpool supporter accused of racially abusing Antoine Semenyo has been adjourned after a psychiatric assessment found he was not fit to take part in proceedings.

According to NY Times, a fitness-to-plea hearing on 7 September will consider further psychiatric reports and determine whether 47-year-old Mark Mogan is able to stand trial.

Semenyo had been due to give evidence at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, in a case arising from Bournemouth’s visit to Anfield on the opening day last August. The Ghana international, who joined Manchester City in January, alleged abuse while preparing a throw-in during the first half of Liverpool’s 4-2 win, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to stop play and a man’s ejection.

Prosecutor Simon Jones said the Crown Prosecution Service did not accept the conclusion of the initial report. Mogan, from Dovecot, Liverpool, attended in a Liverpool-branded wheelchair.

Defence barrister Olivia Belle raised concerns about her client’s ability to participate, citing a history of language and communication difficulties. An initial psychiatric report had concluded he was unfit to stand trial.

Mogan was granted bail on conditions that he does not contact Semenyo or attend any regulated football ground. Should the case proceed, a provisional trial date is set for 14 October.

Liverpool said in August that it condemned all forms of racism and discrimination. The Football Association said it was concerned about the allegation and would ensure appropriate action was taken.
