Former Portugal winger Nani has told Liverpool fans they should be happy about Trent Alexander-Arnold joining Real Madrid and ‘appreciate’ Los Blancos are the biggest club in the world.
Alexander-Arnold has so far rejected offers to sign a new contract at Liverpool and will be able to move on a free transfer in the summer.
Real Madrid are widely expected to be his destination and Los Blancos are set to snap up an £80m talent without Liverpool getting a penny.
Some Liverpool fans are unhappy about Alexander-Arnold walking away for nothing by running down his contract at the club.
Nani though thinks that the right-back is making the right decision and those who have a problem with it do not understand football.
“I think he is doing right. He needs to move to Real Madrid, which is the best club for me in the world”, Nani said on the Rio Ferdinand Presents show (48:22).
“If people have problems because of that they don’t understand football. They don’t have the passion of football because he is a great player.
“He is not a player who was scoring so many goals like [Steven] Gerrard, who made the club champions so many times.
“He is a player who did great for the club. He came from the youth of the club he did well.
“He continued to do it, OK he is a player they love, but they need to respect the decision because for so many years he has given to the club.
“So they need to give him this as well.”
The former Portugal winger insists that Liverpool fans must appreciate Real Madrid are the biggest club in the world and should be happy for Alexander-Arnold.
“Fans need to appreciate there is the best club in the world in a different country who want him and they need to be happy for him.”
Alexander-Arnold has at times been criticised for the level of his defensive work and recently Craig Burley warned that may come back to bite him at Real Madrid.
