Liverpool’s UEFA Youth League campaign started with a worrying sight as summer signing Will Wright was stretchered off during the clash with Atletico Madrid at Kirkby.
The 17-year-old striker, who arrived from Salford City in August, required lengthy treatment on the pitch after going down under a challenge. As Ian Doyle reported on X, Wright “appeared to jar his knee in a challenge” before being taken off.
Doyle added: “Not good news for summer LFC signing Will Wright, who has undergone lengthy treatment on an injury in the UEFA Youth League game against Atletico Madrid and has just left on a stretcher.”

It was a frustrating turn of events for the teenager, who had been tipped for a bright future after netting more than 50 goals at youth level and making his senior debut for Salford last season.
Wright’s signing was part of a wider plan to bolster Liverpool’s attacking options at all levels. Alongside first-team arrivals such as Hugo Ekitike, Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz, the forward represented the club’s next-generation focus.
Liverpool also added goalkeeper Armin Pecsi and defender Giovanni Leoni this summer, further strengthening the academy ranks. The pathway to the senior side is clear for those who impress, with Wright earmarked as one to watch this season under Rob Page’s U21s.
The hope will now be that Wright’s injury is less severe than feared. The club’s medical staff at Kirkby have extensive experience in guiding youngsters through rehabilitation programmes, and Liverpool will want to ensure the forward returns at full strength.
This is an unfortunate blow and raises early concerns. Wright’s signing was seen as a key move in bolstering the long-term striker options, and fans were eager to see him develop alongside the likes of Wirtz and Ekitike in the years to come.
While injuries are part of football, there is understandable worry when a new signing suffers a significant setback so soon after arriving. Supporters will want updates as quickly as possible, and some may question whether Liverpool need to adjust their youth recruitment or training intensity to minimise risks.
The positive is that Liverpool have a proven track record of bringing players back from injury stronger, and the pathway remains open for Wright once he recovers. Patience will be required, but the hope is that this does not derail what could be a very promising career.
