Liverpool have firm interest in Lille’s Ayyoub Bouaddi, who is currently enjoying a standout 2026 World Cup campaign with Morocco, according to journalist Lewis Steele.
The Reds are expected to sign a new midfielder this summer to add steel to the engine room, but it has been all quiet on that front from the Anfield club.
Most of the transfer rumours from the Liverpool mill has been about adding new wingers to the ranks, but getting a new number six is arguably just as important.
Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister struggled last season in the base of the midfield, a key reason for their atrocious Premier League title defence.
Liverpool have to address the issue and per the report, they like Bouaddi, although they are behind several suitors in the race for his signature.
Alongside the Reds, Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City, and others also want the 18-year-old.
Bouaddi has caught the eye with his ability to pinch possession, shield the backline, distribute efficiently, and drive with the ball.
His physical profile also makes him a perfect fit for the very robust Premier League.
Bouaddi is undoubtedly one of Europe’s most exciting young midfielders, and Liverpool would be signing a player with enormous upside if they won the race.
However, he does not solve their biggest problem right now.
What Liverpool need is a specialist number six with the experience and discipline to anchor midfield from day one.
They require someone who can screen, dictate the tempo under pressure and give the likes of Florian Wirtz, Mac Allister and Gravenberch the freedom to influence games.
Bouaddi could become that player in time, but Liverpool’s immediate priority should be a proven, natural holding midfielder capable of stabilising the team from the first whistle.
