Liverpool are heading head first into a crazy £130m deal. It's one they could regret - or absolutely love.

Liverpool need to fix their squad and they need to do it fast. That's an insane thing to be saying just one year after spending over £400m on new players but that's just the reality right now.

The signings last summer did not work in building a cohesive squad. That's one of the reasons Arne Slot lost his job - he was unable to get this group working.

Now things have actually gotten worse, as Liverpool lost Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and, above all, Mohamed Salah this summer. None have properly been replaced, either.

Jeremy Jacquet will likely step in as the new first-choice centre-back but he was actually signed with the idea that Konate would be staying. Kostas Tsimikas returns to offer cover in the absence of Robertson, though this is a player Liverpool tried to offload a year and who couldn't get regular minutes at AS Roma.

Salah simply hasn't been replaced. Even if Liverpool don't want to buy a right-winger to replace him positionally, they still need to find a way to replace his output in some way.

Their pick to do that is quite clearly Bradley Barcola. Now, he typically plays on the opposite side to Salah but he is a player who can deliver goals and assists.

The problem is that Barcola hasn't really shown the ability to do it on Salah's level. His valuation, however, is at Salah's level - Paris Saint-Germain want €180m, says the Athletic.

Now, reports suggest that Liverpool will try to talk them down from that £145m figure. It feels reasonable to assume that things will land in the £130m range, quite honestly.

But we should take a minute to recognise how crazy that is. Such a deal would again break the British transfer record, set a year ago when Liverpool signed Alexander Isak for £125m.

This would be for a player who managed 11 goals and one assist in Ligue 1 last season. Those 12 combined contributions are actually the same as Salah's 12 - only, the Egyptian's season was a sub-par one that showed many that he wasn't an elite player anymore.

Liverpool are now considering paying £130m+ on a player who matched his numbers in an inferior league. Surely that's simply crazy?

And that's before getting into the big question of where will he actually play? That's completely unclear as Barcola prefers the left but so does Cody Gakpo and Rio Ngumoha. And Victor Munoz, for that matter.

Spending all of this money on a player who, while incredibly talented, isn't actually a perfect fit seems insane. Are Liverpool just not going to buy a right-winger? Is the midfield staying as is? Who drifts over to the right then? Will they have money for a new centre-back?
