This summer, Real Madrid are planning to sign a second central defender alongside new addition Ibrahima Konate. New head coach Jose Mourinho is clear that another option is needed, which is why the club’s sporting director has drawn up a shortlist in recent weeks.

The likes of Ruben Dias and Alessandro Bastoni have been considered by Real Madrid, but right now, their favoured target appears to be Nico Schlotterbeck. The Borussia Dortmund and Germany star is able to be signed for €50m this summer, having inserted a release clause in the contract he signed earlier this year.

Real Madrid believe Schlotterbeck would be an ideal signing, but they will face competition for his signature. Liverpool are also plotting a move, although CaughtOffside have reported that the 26-year-old will prioritise a move to the Spanish capital.

Antonio Rudiger, who touted Schlotterbeck for a move to Real Madrid earlier in the week, is said to be one of the reasons why the Dortmund defender would prefer to head to the Bernabeu. The pair have a very good relationship that has been built up during their time in the German national team, and thus, the opportunity to play alongside Rudiger at club level is one that attracts Schlotterbeck greatly.

For now, Real Madrid are yet to make a definitive decision on their second centre-back signing, with the final call still to be made by Mourinho. Schlotterbeck is certainly in contention, and given his price, he would be an excellent market opportunity for Los Blancos, as they seek to continue adding star-studded players to their squad.

It remains to be seen whether Schlotterbeck does end up at Real Madrid, but if Bernabeu bosses decide against a move for the Dortmund man, it would not be a surprise to see him end up at Liverpool.
