Reds have a few key fitness concerns ahead of Premier League return against Manchester United

Liverpool are just days away from a massive Premier League showdown against Manchester United.

The reigning champions of England, who won their first five matches of the campaign, will go into the big clash at Anfield having lost back-to-back games against Crystal Palace and Chelsea.

Throw in the 1-0 reverse at the hands of Galatasaray in the Champions League, the Reds have suffered three straight defeats across all competitions for the first time under Arne Slot.

With the second international break of the season nearing a conclusion, Slot will be keen for all of his stars to return in good condition and ready to get back down to business.

However, there has been some worrying news during the break with two senior players pulling out of their respective national team squads, thus raising doubts ahead of the United game.

That said, here’s a look at the latest Liverpool injury news...

Ryan Gravenberch

Liverpool’s in-form midfielder handed Slot a fresh scare by playing only 45 minutes for the Netherlands in their 4-0 win over Finland in World Cup qualifying on Sunday night.

Dutch boss Ronald Koeman confirmed afterwards that Ryan Gravenberch had been complaining of a hamstring problem and that he did not want to take any risks with his fitness.

Gravenberch himself admitted that his half-time substitution was partially fitness-related, though insisted it was a precautionary measure and that he felt “good”.

Potential return date: October 19, vs Manchester United (H)

Ibrahima Konate

Ibrahima Konate did not finish the game against Chelsea and Slot has confirmed the substitution was injury-related.

The Frenchman complained about a quad issue but joined up with the France squad in what seemed like a huge boost ahead of the United game.

To concern Slot and Liverpool supporters, Konate left the France squad on Saturday after not featuring in the 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifying on Friday night.

Upon returning to Merseyside, the central defender will be assessed to determine if he will be passed fit to start against the Red Devils.

Potential return date: Unknown

Alisson Becker

Alisson missed Brazil's win over South Korea and will not face Japan in a friendly later this week.

Worryingly, Slot is pessimistic over having Liverpool’s first-choice goalkeeper available for the United game.

There have been reports that Alisson is expected to be sidelined for up to six weeks. While Slot did not confirm a timeline for a return, he did all but rule the goalkeeper out of the United showdown on October 19.

"It depends on how fast the recovery goes, so it’s clear that he is not going to play for Brazil,” Slot told reporters ahead of the Chelsea loss.

"I will be surprised if he [Alisson] will be there for the first game after the international break. From there on things can go a bit faster or a bit slower. It's difficult to say the amount of days and weeks.

“For the upcoming games he will not be apart of us or the Brazil team.”

Potential return date: Late October

Wataru Endo

Wataru Endo did not join up with the Japan squad because of injury, the national team confirmed in a statement last week.

“Japan National Team will be without Wataru Endo (Liverpool FC) due to injury in the Kirin Challenge Cup 2025 (October 10th vs. Paraguay in Osaka, October 14th vs. Brazil in Tokyo).”

The extent of the injury was not disclosed, though subsequent comments made by Japan manager Hajime Moriyasu have made it sound very much like a precautionary measure.

Potential return date: October 19, vs Manchester United (H)

Giovanni Leoni

Liverpool defender Giovanni Leoni faces a year out of action with a serious knee injury.

The 18-year-old centre-back was hurt on his first appearance at Anfield against Championship side Southampton in the third round of the Carabao Cup as he landed awkwardly following a late challenge in the 2-1 win.

He received treatment on the pitch and was eventually stretchered off, with subsequent tests revealing an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

Slot has confirmed that Leoni will be on the sidelines for around a year having torn his ACL.

“He’s not in a good place, of course,” the Reds boss said. “He tore his ACL which means that he will be out for around a year.

“Being so young, coming to a new country, playing so well in your first game, it’s very hard to take the positives. You always try to look at the positive side and that is that he is still so young.

“He still has so many years to go after he recovers from a terrible injury like that.”
