It took Arne Slot a lot of time to decide that he was good enough to regularly feature but, once he did, it was clear that he had bags of potential that he could fulfil.

And, now that Andoni Iraola is the manager and has already said that he's looking forward to using the Reds' youngsters this term, it could give Ngumoha a new lease of life and potentially a regular starting role.

However, news broke on Friday evening that Bayern Munich were interested in signing the Englishman which came as a shock to everyone.

And now, sources close to the situation have shared how the Anfield outfit actually felt after hearing the news about the young attacker.

Liverpool were 'taken aback' by Bayern Munich's Rio Ngumoha pursuit

As mentioned, Ngumoha was one of the fans' favourite players this season.

After Hugo Ekitike and Dominik Szoboszlai, the youngster was one of the only Liverpool players who actually wanted to put up a bit of a fight.

Other members of the squad seemed to just give up which is why seeing Ngumoha in the team was a breath of fresh air.

Indeed, the 17-year-old may only have two years left on his current deal but that still doesn't mean that other clubs should be looking at making a move with journalist Alex Crook sharing how the Reds really felt about the transfer news.

"Liverpool sources taken aback by the Bayern Rio story," he wrote via his personal X account.

"No permission granted to speak to the player and no plans to sell."

Liverpool must do everything they can to extend Rio Ngumoha's contract

Even though Fenway Sports Group may have only just appointed Andoni Iraola as their head coach, their next task must be to negotiate a new deal with Ngumoha.

The youngster is clearly England's next big thing and, if he follows a similar development route to Yan Diomande, he could easily be worth £100 million in the next few years.

Ngumoha has everything that you'd want in an attacker. He's versatile, lightning quick and also has a keen eye for goal when given the chance.

And, since wingers are a bit of a problem area for the Anfield outfit now with Mohamed Salah exiting, the Reds can't really afford to lose yet another one.

If Liverpool's first job on their priority list isn't to extend Ngumoha's contract this term, then some serious questions will need to be asked.

Here's hoping that Iraola, Richard Hughes and Michael Edwards all see eye-to-eye and get a deal done.
