He started the Spanish league season in possession of the starting shirt - but fell out of favour quickly to the returning Dani Carvajal.
It became apparent that the England international was going to be used in place of the veteran Spain international only to keep Carvajal fresh for the latter stages of the season.
And on one of his Champions League outings - against Marseille - he suffered yet another injury which ruled him out of around two months of action.
The 27-year-old recently made his return to the competitive arena - even if his performances were under scrutiny by Madrid fans and media alike.
He featured from the start against Athletic Club on Wednesday night - contributing a fine assist for Kylian Mbappe - but disaster has struck again. He did not even last an hour of the clash at San Memes - being replaced early in the second half by Raul Asencio.
Madrid reporter Aranche Rodriguez has confirmed that Trent has suffered more injury woe - this time a quadriceps problem that is expected to sideline him for up to two months.
It’s clear the move isn’t working out for Trent - who has also lost his place in Thomas Tuchel’s England setup.
And while tears were shed at the homegrown hero leaving the club after two decades - the truth of this transfer is now becoming clear.
